Accident

On July 14, 1999 at approximately 17:12, the Big Blue collapsed during the construction of the Miller Park baseball stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with a payload of over 450 tons (440 tons long, 500 short tons) on the hook. Three Local Iron Workers 8 members, Jeffrey Wischer, William DeGrave, and Jerome Starr, were killed when a suspended personnel platform where they observed the elevator was hit by a falling crane. A camera crew was filming the stadium's construction that day and captured the video collapse as it happened.

Wind speeds between 20 to 21 miles per hour (32 to 34 km/h), with gusts up to 26 to 27 miles per hour (42 to 43 km/h), at the time of collapse. The explosion was rated up to 20 miles per hour (32 km/h), and other workers have expressed concern at wind speeds.

The investigation revealed that although the side wind effect on the crane itself has been calculated, it has not been considered for the lifted crane load.
