Kathy Cox (born August 10, 1964) is a former head of public school for the US state of Georgia, and a Republican. A high school teacher by occupation, Cox also served two terms, from 1998 to 2002, at Georgia House of Representatives, representing Peachtree City, Georgia, before his election as an inspector in 2002. Cox sought re-election in 2006, defeating Democrats challengers Denise Majette (former US representative), gets nearly 60 percent of the vote.

Cox was not associated with Cathy Cox, a Democrat who was elected as secretary of state elected by Georgia from 1999 to 2007. The similarities in the names became the topic of most of the funny stories of 2002, when opponents of the losing Kathy Cox, Barbara Christmas , complaining that he got lost due to confusion of voters between the two Coxes.

On September 5, 2008, Cox became the first million dollar winner on American television show. Are You Smart Than 5 Graders? (and the first wins according to the order of the broadcast event). His final question was, "Who's the longest British monarch who ruled?" Cox answered Queen Victoria correctly. Cox intends to donate all his wins to three schools in Georgia: the Georgia Academy for the Blind at Macon, the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf at Clarkston, and the Georgia School for the Deaf in the Spring Cave. All three schools are under the auspices of the Georgia Board of Education. This plan was influenced by his personal bankruptcy at the end of 2008.

In May 2010, he announced his resignation effective July 1, 2010 to take on the position of CEO of the New Education Institution, Nonprofit Income Institution at Washington D.C. He will no longer be looking for a third position in the office. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue appointed Brad Bryant as a temporary State School Inspector until his successor (John Barge, a Republican) was elected in November 2010.

Evolutionary controversy

In 2004, Cox proposed to strike out the word "evolution" from a Georgian textbook and replace it with the phrase "biological change over time." In justifying his decision, he stated that evolution is a key word that creates problems for teachers in conservative and rural areas, and that he is not trying to clarify the subject matter. Among those who criticized the proposal were former President Jimmy Carter-a Georgian, a Democrat and a famous Baptist-said he was "embarrassed by Inspector Kathy Cox's efforts to censor and distort Georgia student education... there can be no incompatibility between the Christian faith and the proven facts about geology, biology, and astronomy. Personal bankruptcy

On November 17, 2008, Cox and her husband announced the bankruptcy of Chapter 7 for the failure of her husband's home construction business, recorded $ 3.5 million in debt and $ 650,000 in assets. Bankruptcy also affects the money won for schools on Are You Smarter than 5 Graders? . Fidelity's investments, investors accused of making funds for donor schools, donated a return victory to Fox in December 2008 from schools, placing gifts in limbo that would not benefit anyone.

On August 19, 2009, protesters representing deaf and blind children surrounded Gary W. Brown's bankruptcy law firm in Newnan, for his attempts to control the victory. According to Brown, the victory belongs to the property of bankruptcy, and must be used to repay creditors.

In October 2010, US Bankruptcy Judge W. Homer Drake signed an agreement to break the $ 1 million victory into two equal parts: one half for creditors and the other half for three state-run schools for the blind and deaf.
