Patrick A. Shea (born February 28, 1948) is a Salt Lake City lawyer who has handled many cases related to press freedom. He also holds a position in the United States Department of the Interior.
Shea co-authored Rodney K. Smith Religion and the Press: Keeping the First Amendment Value in the Balance Sheet , a book that states that Press Freedom has been made too far in allowing the media to publish unreported claims. which undermines religious leaders.
Shea served as Assistant Staff Director of the Special Senate Committee who investigated the United States Intelligence Community, 1975-76. Shea is US Senate Foreign Relations Advisor who deals with Taiwan Relations Law, Camp David Agreements and attempts to ratify the SALT II Agreement. Shea is General Counsel for Standard Communications, a private communications company with twelve televisions, twelve radio stations, several newspapers and cable systems from 1985 to 1993. Shea also represents the Massachusetts Democratic Party in search of getting enough information to exclude Mitt Romney from run for governor in Massachusetts. He represents Skip Knowles in his case involving being fired by the Salt Lake Tribune for plagiarism. He represents Steven Greenstreet's defense of Kay Anderson's efforts to prevent the use of Greenstreet's interview with Anderson in the documentary This Divided State. Shea is also one of the lawyers for Brent Jeffs in her sexual abuse of her uncle Warren Jeffs. She was received in the bars of the District of Columbia and Utah.

Education
Shea received her bachelor's degree from Stanford University. He then was the Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. He received a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1975. He has taught at Brigham Young University, Utah University, Kansas State University, and Westminster College. Since returning to Utah in 2001 Shea has been a faculty member of the political science faculty at the University of Utah. Shea is an additional faculty member from the Department of Agronomy at Kansas State University from 2001-2009. Shea is a Fellowship Advisor for the Honors Program at Westminster College, Salt Lake City in collaboration with 'The Living Arts Experience: A Seminar in Liberal Ideals'. Shea is Professor of Biological Research at the University of Utah and serves as a consultant to the Dean of the College of Science. He teaches courses for senior and first year graduate students entitled "Urban Life Biography". This course examines the interactions between the geology, hydrology, and biology of the Canyon located next to the University of Utah.

Political career
Shea became chairman of the Utah Democratic Party in 1983 and led the Walter Mondale state presidential campaigns, Michael Dukakis, and Bill Clinton. He ran for the governor of Utah in 1992 (losing 57% to 43% in the primary to Stewart Hanson, who finished third behind Republican winners Mike Leavitt and Merrill Cook Independent in the general election), and is a Democratic candidate for the US Senate United fought Orrin Hatch in 1994 (losing 68.8% -28.3%).
Shea served as Commissioner at the Gore Commission on Flight Safety and Security, 1996-97 which investigated the TWA accident of 800 August 1996.
In 1997, Shea was appointed as the national director of the Land Management Bureau. he served as director of the Land Management Bureau and Assistant Deputy Secretary for Land and Mineral Management under President Clinton.
Before becoming head of BLM, Shea is head of City Creek Canyon Park in Salt Lake City.
Shea is an Irish Catholic.
