Political career

Sanchez was elected to the New Mexico Representative Council for District 15, Valley of the North: Bernalillo, in 1971. He held office until 2000. Sanchez and Walter K. Martinez were leaders of the liberal "Mama Lucy Gang". The group is controlling the home and preventing the conservative "Democratic Cowboy" from a farming area in the south of the country from controlling the main committee. In the 1982 election, the liberal Democrats constituted a solid majority of the forty-seven Democrats, and Sanchez was elected as a non-contradictory speaker of the Cowboys. Sanchez had been a speaker at the house for sixteen years. In 2000, Raymond Sanchez failed to be re-elected home, losing to newcomer John Sanchez, a Republican. The defeat may be in part because voters get confused with the names.
