Payment settlement law

In February 2013, the Illinois Senate introduced the Senate Bill 1912, passed by both chambers of the General Assembly and signed into law by the then Governor Pat Quinn (Public Act 98-548). The bill was encouraged by the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association (ITLA). Defying the law is the Illinois Defense Courts Defense Association (IDC), the Illinois Insurance Association and the Association of American Wealth Victims. The law requires the defendant to settle a lawsuit to lodge a waiver of the plaintiff within 14 days of the settlement agreement; and pay the settlement within one month after receiving the executed release.

The ITLA president said that the idea for the law came from Clifford, who is a former president of ITLA.

Campaign contribution

Fifth District Court of Appeal

In autumn 2016, Clifford donated campaigns to Jo Beth Weber, Democratic candidate for the Fifth District Court. He collected most of his money from two law firms that run business in the Madison County court system. The webpage of the District Fifth District Court, as of February 2017, shows Weber's opponent as still remaining in court, indicating that he lost his race.

Illinois Supreme Court

â € <â €

On September 12, 2016, the Illinois Supreme Court elected Justice Lloyd Karmeier as his new Supreme Court justice. Around the same time, US District Judge David Herndon filed a class action suit against State Farm for $ 9 billion in connection with Karmeier's election in 2004. The lawsuit alleges that State Farm secretly supported Karmeier's election in 2004 instead of Karmeier canceling the $ 1 billion against State Farm. The assessment came from an experiment in Williamson County that found State Farm responsible for providing lower auto parts for accidental repairs.

In 2005, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned a $ 1 billion decision against State Farm. Since that decision, lawyers have claimed that both State Farm and Philip Morris channeled money through various channels to hide contributions to Karmeier's campaign in 2004.

The plaintiff's lawyer who sued Philip Morris lost in their case and twice unsuccessfully attempted to overturn their losses in the Illinois Supreme Court, using allegations of illegal campaign contributions to Karmeier. Lawyers who lost State Farm cases, however, took their case to federal court. The lawyers filed a lawsuit against extortion against State Farm in 2012. The lawsuit seeks to restore the verdict with three damages and interest. The case was filed to District Judge David Herndon.

Negative ad campaign contribution

In October 2014, with Karmeier on the ballot, lawyers in five states collected $ 2.07 million for a television campaign accusing Karmeier of selling justice. Robert Clifford contributed $ 250,000. Karmeier won the election to keep his position in court.
