History

The law firm of Sands Anderson PC traces the legal practice of Alexander Hamilton Sands (1828-1887). On May 23, 1842, Mr. Sands moved to Richmond, Virginia to work in the law firm of his brother William G. Sands, who not only enforced the law but was also the High Court Clerk and Richmond City Explorers.

On May 8, 1851, Mr. Sands married Ella Virginia Goddin, daughter of Wellington and Eliza P. Goddin. They have thirteen children, one of them also named Alexander H. Sands. Their fourth child, Conway Robinson Sands (1860-1920) was also a lawyer who maintained an office in Travelers Building and served as Virginia Senator from 1883-1884 and 1893-1898.

According to the Richmond Directory in 1860, Mr. Sands is John Howard's partner at the Richmond and Sands law firm with an office at Goddin's building (owned by his father-in-law).

In the early 1880s, Mr. Sands practiced law with his son Conway at a firm known as Sands & amp; Sands, and he continued his legal practice until shortly before his death on December 22, 1887.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Mr. Sands, Alexander began practicing law with his brother Conway at a firm known as Sands & amp; Sands. After Conway stopped training, Alex Sands formed the Sands and Lightfoot firm, which later became Sands, Williams, and Lightfoot. At one point, he served as Richmond City Commonwealth Lawyer, in addition to doing his private practice, and he worked as a defense attorney after he resigned as a Commonwealth Lawyer.

When Alex Sands's son, as well as Alexander H. Sands, graduated from law school in the 1930s he joined his father's practice, forming the Sands & amp; Sands. When the younger Sands joined the Navy at the beginning of World War II, Edward A. Marks, Jr. leaving Christian and Barton to join the Elder Sands. When the younger Sands return from the War, the Sands, Marks & amp; Sands is formed. The firm grew and became Sands, Marks, Sands, Henning & amp; Sydnor.

In 1960, the younger Mr. Sands was appointed to the Richmond City Law and Equality Court, and A. Scott Anderson and J. Calvitt Clarke, Jr. leaving Bowles, Anderson, Boyd, Clarke & amp; Herrod. Finally Messrs. Anderson and Clarke joined Mr. Marks and the old Sands to form Sands, Anderson, Marks & amp; Clarke, originally based in the American Building. In June 1962, Frank B. Miller, III joined Sands, Anderson, Marks & amp; Clarke as a partner.

In 1967, the old Sands, who practiced law into the 90s, died. Also in 1967, the firm moved its offices to the Fidelity Building (now One Capitol Square) on Jalan Ninth and Utama. Cal Clarke went to the federal bench in Norfolk on January 1, 1975, and the bureau became Sands, Anderson & amp; Short mark before becoming Sands, Anderson, Marks & amp; Miller.

In 1981, a company that had grown significantly in large numbers due to its growing reputation in complex litigation, moved its office from the Fidelity Building to 629 E. Main Street, the former headquarters of South Cooperative. On June 1, 1986, Woodward & amp; Lacy merged into Sands, Anderson, Marks & amp; Miller, a number of lawyers from White, Cabell, Paris, and Lowenstein joined the company, and they moved their offices to the Ross House.

In March 2000 they moved their Richmond offices from the Ross House to the top three floors of the WyteStone Plaza. They opened the North Carolina Office on 1 March 2001, and the Fredericksburg Office on 1 October 2001, and on May 1, 2003, Schraub & amp; Howell Chtd. joined the company to form the Northern Virginia Head Office. In 2010, the company changed its name to Sands Anderson PC.
