Controversy
In May 2013 the FBI and the US Attorney's Office opened an investigation into alleged assault of suspects in police custody, subsequent concealment and coercion by James Burke, Head of the Suffolk County Police Department; accusations that the former leader pleaded guilty to. The federal investigation then expanded beyond Burke to investigate a wider pattern of corruption in both the police department and the Suffolk County district attorney's office, Thomas J. Spota.
In October 2017, Spota and an aide were indicted on charges of blocking James Burke's investigation.
