The lawyer's indecent behavior is an unethical or illegal act by a lawyer. Lawyers Violations may include: conflicts of interest, excessive bills, refusing to represent clients for political or professional motives, false or misleading statements, conceal evidence, abandoning clients, failing to disclose all relevant facts, citing temporary neglect positions to reveal previously possible laws against arguments, and in some cases having sex with clients.

The emergence of electronic record keeping and "e-discovery" has also resulted in a number of lawyer sanctions notes for various breaches of failure to produce until leaked sealed documents. In a case that highlights the violation, in 2007 plaintiffs in a pharmaceutical lawsuit were found in conspiracy with lawyers and journalists to publish protected discovery documents against the protective orders of judges.

As Durham County, North Carolina prosecutor Mike Nifong gained national resentment for a pattern of lawyer offenses related to the lacrosse team scandal Duke University 2006.

Legal malpractice is a separate concept such as when a lawyer fails adequately, professionally, competently, or enthusiastically represents the client. While malpractice and bad behavior are often found in the same thing, they are separate concepts and do not need to both exist.

Codification rules and enforcement

The American Bar Association (ABA) has established the rules of professional behavioral model expected from lawyers, most states in the US have been incorporated as part of their state legislation. Each country issues its own set of rules governing the ethical rules and enforcement of those rules, generally through their state bar associations. Since the state bar organizations and enforcement mechanisms consist of lawyers who set the rules, the lawyers' ethical rules are self-governed and self-supervised. The self-regulation of any industry by its economic participants creates an inherent conflict of interest between the professional goals of the members of the profession and those to be protected by the rule. Some academic researchers and industry experts have asserted that the discipline of lawyers in the US is ineffective, and preferably lawyers and law firms.

Personal or corporate lawyers may be cited for misconduct by a judge in the original proceedings or by the relevant country bar.
