William Horlick "Bill" Neukom (born 1942) is a former managing general partner of the group of owners of the San Francisco Giants baseball team. He held this position from May 2008 to December 31, 2011 and he is managing partner when the Giants won the World Series in 2010, the first World Series victory since the team moved to California in 1958. Prior to holding this position, he was President of the American Bar Association in 2007-08. He was the main legal advisor to Microsoft for nearly 25 years. He is also Chairman of the law firm of Gates in Seattle, now part of K & amp; L Gates. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Pacific Council on International Policy and spends most of his time focused on his role as Founder & CEO of World Justice Project.

Early life and education

Neukom was born in 1942, seven years before his brother, Daniel Neukom, who was a history teacher at the Sacramento Country Day School. She grew up in the Bay Area community in San Mateo, California. He lived in the Bay Area when the Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958. He graduated from San Mateo High School in 1960.

He received a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1964.

After receiving a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth, Neukom returned to the Bay Area where he received a law degree from Stanford Law School in 1967.

Legal and Microsoft Career

After completing his law degree, Neukom served as a scribe for Judge Theodore S. Turner of King County High Court in Seattle in 1967-68.

In 1977, he joined the Seattle Shidler, McBroom, Gates & amp; Lucas (later Preston Gates & Ellis). The Neukom relationship with Microsoft began in 1978 when managing partner Bill Gates Sr. asking him to advise his son's software business. Neukom started doing legal work for Microsoft when the company only had 12 employees. He will continue to be Microsoft's chief legal advisor for nearly 25 years.

Neukom joined Microsoft as an employee in 1985 and subsequently built a corporate legal department from an initial staff of five to more than 600 lawyers and support personnel. He became Executive Vice President at Microsoft. He spent 17 years as Microsoft's general counsel and chief law officer, managing legal affairs, government affairs, and corporate philanthropic activities.

He is actively involved in legally defending Microsoft intellectual property in several countries, especially in Apple v. Microsoft. He is also involved in defending Microsoft from a series of complex antitrust suits (ie United v. Microsoft). Neukom led Microsoft's defeat by the US Department of Justice in the so-called "court of this century". While at Microsoft, Neukom also directed the company's corporate affairs program, which started corporate grant programs including Microsoft Giving Campaign, Microsoft Matching Prize Program, and Microsoft Volunteer Program. In 2002, Neukom retired from Microsoft as Executive Vice President, Legal & amp; Corporate Affairs.

After Microsoft, Neukom returns to Preston Gates & amp; Ellis as a partner in the practice of corporate business law. In January 2004 he was appointed chairman of the company. In 2007 Preston Gates & amp; Ellis joins Kirkpatrick and Lockhart from Pittsburgh to form a large law firm now called K & amp; L Gates. Neukom is no longer affiliated with the company.

Neukom served as president of the American Bar Association for a one-year term from August 2007 to August 2008.

San Francisco Giants

Neukom has been an investor in the Giants since 1995 and on May 16, 2008 named the new Managing General Partner for the Giants. He succeeded Peter Magowan, who retired at the end of the 2008 season at the age of 66. Neukom and other investors bought some of Peter Magowan's ownership in the team. Neukom became an active investor of the first team after Magowan's ownership reduction, the death of Harmon Burns (the leading investor who died in 2006) and the death of Sue Burns, who died in 2009.

On September 14, 2011, Bill Neukom announced he retired as Managing General Partner and CEO of the San Francisco Giants effective January 1, 2012, and he will be replaced by Giants executive Larry Baer. The San Jose Mercury reported an anonymous source who said that Neukom was forced out due to differences in ownership groups about how to split the extra money earned after the Giants won the World Series 2010. The Mercury also reported Giants shareholders Charles Bartlett Johnson bought additional interest in the team, becoming the largest individual shareholder at 25%.

Philanthropy work

Between 1996 and 2007, Neukom was a member of the Board of Trustees of Dartmouth College and he served as chairman of the board from 2004 to 2007. Three of his sons had attended Dartmouth. He is the founding donor of The Neukom Institute for Computational Science at Dartmouth College, which aims to advance computing resources and applications in various aspects of the Dartmouth curriculum.

In 2006, Neukom committed to awarding $ 20 million for the construction of a new academic building planned at the Stanford University law faculty. The structure, named William H. Neukom Building and opened in 2011, is 65,000 square feet and is located in an existing law school complex.

World Justice Project

Neukom is Founder, President and CEO of World Justice Project. The World Justice Project works internationally to strengthen the Rule of Law, which aims to promote the development of opportunities and equality communities.
