Sally Tanner (born 1926) represents California's 60th District in the California State Assembly from 1979 to 1992. His legislative career covers environmental issues, including the chairman of the Committee on the Materials of Safety and Environmental Hazard. On consumer issues, Tanner is the author of consumer protection measures that come to colloquialism referred to as the California Orange Law. As one of the founders of the 1987 program "Women of the Year", he also became the honorary recipient in 2009.

Political career

Tanner's political career began as a volunteer for Adlai Stevenson II's 1956 presidential campaign followed by experience as Administrative Assistant to both District 58 members Harvey Johnson in Boston for ten years and Congressman George E. Danielson. In 1979 Tanner ran for Representative of California's 60th District and served for 14 years.

In 1981, he helped Willie Brown become the first chairman of the African American Assembly in California. When he helped create California's first committee in the neighborhood, the Environmental Safety Committee and Poisonous Materials, Tanner was named first president. The committee generally considers bills related to environmental pollution, chemical and toxic hazards, and product safety.

Tanner introduced many bills to clean up the environment during his career. In 1982, he wrote a California law (Civil Code Section Ã,§ 1793.22 et. Seq.) Formally named Tanner's Consumer Protection Act, although generally and officially known as the "California Orange Law". It mandates refunds, reimbursement or compensation to consumers for unresolved life-threatening problems in new vehicles for the first 18,000 miles or 18 months, whichever comes first. On January 1, 2001, the law was amended to consider a lemon vehicle if two failed repairs failed.

Tanner was a founding member of Caucus Legislative California Women in 1985. At the same time, he was appointed as the governor's task force for waste, energy, and technology and was asked to draft a state waste management plan by Governor George Deukmejian. In 1987, with Republican Assemblywoman Bev Hansen, Tanner founded the legislative program "Woman of the Year".
