Legal roads or the road to refers to vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, or light trucks equipped and licensed for use on public roads, because of highways. This will require a special configuration of lighting, signal lighting, and security equipment. Some special vehicles that will not be operated on the streets do not require all the features of street legal vehicles; examples are vehicles that are used only off-road (such as sandrails) that are on-trail to off-road areas of operation, and race cars that are only used on closed racing tracks and therefore do not require all the features of a street- legal vehicle. As well as motor vehicles, road-legal differences apply in some areas to track bikes that do not have lights and road-legal brakes. Road legality rules can even affect racing car helmets, which have too narrow a visual field to use on open roads without the risk of losing a fast moving vehicle.

Kanada

In Canada, all ten provinces follow a series of national criteria issued by Canadian Transport for the special equipment required as part of a street legal vehicle. In some provinces, the Traffic Act is a matter of provincial jurisdiction; provinces with such laws include Ontario, Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Many but not all US model vehicles qualify to be imported into Canada, but must meet the requirements for items such as daytime running lights (standard on Canadian market vehicles since 1991, but not required in the US), anti-theft immobilisers, and anchor points for child seats. Cars from other countries (such as the UK) are usually not eligible, because standards are too different from those in Canada.

The laws on aftermarket goods such as studded tires, snow tires and radar detectors vary widely among provinces.

India

Requirements to create, register and operate motor vehicles in India are codified by the Motor Vehicle Regulations Center (CMVR), as maintained by the Ministry of Road and Road Transportations. Legitimate two, three, and four-wheel vehicles must comply with the structure, safety equipment, and operating conditions in CMVR 93-125.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, vehicles must pass a Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) scheme, pre-registration checks for unapproved cars and lightweight vehicles of the same type for British or European standards. Since August 2001, there are two levels of SVA, 'standard' and 'upgraded'. SVA standards applied vehicles such as left-hand drive, privately-imported vehicles, amateur made vehicles and armored vehicles, to name a few. Vehicles not included in any of the standard SVA categories - such as the right-hand drive vehicle - require enhanced SVA in addition to standard SVA inspections.

SVA is in the process of being replaced by Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA).

United States

In the United States, each country has the authority to determine, through laws and regulations, the types of vehicles allowed on public roads, as a function of police force. Vehicles that are considered legal on the road in the US include cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Some vehicles that are not generally sold for road driving - such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and golf carts - can be adapted for road use, where permitted by state law.

Most of the requirements for cars are mostly consistent among US states. An important exception is California's emissions control, which is traditionally more stringent than in other states. General requirements for cars include structures (eg hood) and safety equipment (eg headlamps and bumpers).

General requirements for motorcycles include side mirrors and special seats for transporting passengers. However, conditions vary widely on other equipment such as turn signal.
