Tierney Darden v. City of Chicago is a civil court case in Cook County, Illinois. In August 2017, the jury gave Tierney Darden $ 148 million for damages after a pedestrian sanctuary at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport collapsed, leaving Darden partially paralyzed. This case resulted in the highest compensation award given to a person in the state of Illinois, and one of the top five in the United States, excluding punishment for damages, wrongful death claims, and imprisoned defendants.

In August 2015, Darden, then, a 24-year-old Truman College student from Mundelein, Illinois, was standing with his mother and sister outside Terminal 2 O'Hare waiting for transportation. The storm suddenly blanketed the airport and the family sought refuge behind the pedestrian quarters. Strong winds rolled glass and steel structures weighing 750 pounds into the Darden, cutting off his spine and paralyzing him from the waist down. His mother, Trudy Darden, and his sister, Tayah Minniefeld, were also wounded. Darden injuries result in permanent loss of foot use, chronic neuropathic pain, 24-hour treatment requirements, and 20 prescription medications. The medical bills initially amounted to $ 985,411.
The lawsuit prompted an investigation by CBS Chicago, which determined that excessive rusting had weakened the shelter supporting poles and the missing bolts. The investigation also revealed other shelters at the airport had lost bolts, corroded parts, or broken brackets.

Case
Darden, with his mother and sister, filed a lawsuit for negligence at the Illinois Circuit Court for County Cook against the City of Chicago and the City of the Chicago Department of Aviation. The case was heard on August 10, 2017, with judge Clare McWilliams presiding. Darden is represented by attorneys Patrick A. Salvi, Jeffrey J. Kroll, Tara R Devine, Patrick Salvi II, and Eirene N. Salvi from Salvi, Schostok & amp; Pritchard P.C. "The misplaced behavior of City of Chicago forever changed Tierney's way of life, he will never walk or dance again," Kroll said as he opened the statement. Chicago officials acknowledge mistakes before the trial, and their legal team, from Williams & amp; Gundlach LLC and Dentons US LLP, offered $ 30 million in compensation.
Advisory team Darden asked the jury to give $ 174,934,582. After four hours of discussion on August 23 rd , the jury returned a verdict giving $ 148,190,997. The city appealed, then settled for $ 115 million, still the highest personal injury payment in Illinois history.
