Alfred Silas Bennett (June 10, 1854 - November 28, 1925) is an American judge, educator, and lawyer in Oregon. He is the 49th Association of Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, serving from 1919 to 1920. Previously he had served as a state circuit court judge and as a county school supervisor. As a native of Iowa, he practiced law in The Dalles, Oregon, with some cases making him to the United States Supreme Court.

Kehidupan awal

Alfred Bennett was born in Dubuque, Iowa on June 10, 1854. In 1865 he and his parents took the Oregon Trail to Oregon and settled in Washington County. In 1870 Alfred set out on his own and eventually ended up in The Dalles, Oregon where he taught and studied law between 1873 and 1880. In 1880, he graduated bar, this time as Wasco school supervisor from school from 1878 to 1882.

Judicial career

In September 1882 Alfred Bennett was appointed as the 8th district court judge that covered Eastern Oregon and remained at the post for two years. He then returned to private practice and married Mary McCauley in 1887. In 1918 Bennett won the election to the Supreme Court of Oregon. He replaces Conrad P. Olson who serves the rest of Frank A. Moore's term after Moore dies at the office. Alfred Bennett then resigned from court on October 5, 1920. He then continued his private practice at The Dalles before he died on November 28, 1925.

While in private practice, Bennett put forward several cases before the United States Supreme Court. In 1896 Bennett represented Jane Skottowe at Oregon S. L. & amp; U. N. R. Co. v. Skottowe in a personal injury suit. In 1912, he represented Hamilton H. Hendricks against the government with allegations of perjury at Hendricks v. United States .

Bennett and his wife had an Anita Bennett daughter married Harold T. Hopkins, the owner of a local newspaper once, The Dalles Chronicle. Alfred and his family live in a Victorian house now known as Bennett-Williams House at The Dalles.
