Critical response
The Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce was met with positive reviews from television critics. At Metacritic, which gives a weighted average rating of 100 reviews from critics, this series received an average score of 69, based on 21 reviews. Lori Rackl of Chicago Sun-Times gave the episode a 4 star rating (of 4 stars), calling it "a sometimes funny and sometimes sad story about LA-based self-help writers" and added that two episodes first "reveals a much more nuanced and moving story, punctuated by some really funny scenes." LaToya Ferguson from The A.V. Club gives this series an "A-" value, calling it a "very solid drama" that should be on HBO or Showtime. Ferguson also praised the character and series's complexity, writing "Visually, almost flawless (there's a moment of clear green screen in the pilot, but that's not the Ringer level), but every character here is severely flawed." Los Angeles Times ' s Mary McNamara praised the portrayal of the characters' role and assumed the series was "behaving intelligently, written quickly and eager to solve all sorts of problems - marriage, betrayal, family economics, friendships, even the trap of public household life - in a very complicated way. "Brian Lowry, writing for Variety , praised casting and material series, noting how he attaches to network demography while maintaining a quality level.
Gail Pennington from St. Louis Post-Dispatch calls the series "a smart and solid examination of how messy the relationship is and how hard it is to make it work." Slate ' Willa Paskin highlights Edelstein's portrayal of the main character, describing it as "an excellent cast, both ruling and nurturing enough to look like an ideal advocate" and taking notes that this series has "satisfying and complex disclosures on social dynamics in friendship and romance." Alessandra Stanley of The New York Times praised Edelstein and Garofalo as "one reason" the show was entertaining and found the comic side of the series "more fun." ' s author James Poniewozik praised the writing and "sympathetic" performance of Edelstein, noting that the last "reason for a frequently played show is like the fiction of young adults to real adults. "However, Poniewozik argues that" there is one lesson about the Boyfriend's Guide to Divorce has been (more than) learned from his Bravo colleagues: that there is no reality so attractive that it can not be sweetened with small Photoshop. " David Hinckley, writing for the New York Daily News, highlighted the best moments of the series as showing the messy side of the wedding discourse while touting Edelstein's performance as "memorizing the memorable." Margaret Lyons of Vulture is critical of some aspects of the series, including Abby's character and Lyla's attitude in providing the support of their partner's child, but finding the series to be the best "on the disgusting."
