Mark M. O'Mara (born February 8, 1956) is an American criminal defense lawyer in Orlando, Florida, known as George Zimmerman's lawyer. He's a former prosecutor.

Early life and education

O'Mara is one of five siblings in a Roman Catholic family of Irish descent. He grew up in Rosedale, Queens, New York City. His father, John Joseph O'Mara, was a World War II veteran, shot down in Germany and spent the better part of a year in the POW camp, until he was released by Russia. He returned to Brooklyn and married his fiancée, Anna "Nancy" McAteer. He later joined the New York Fire Department, where he boarded the Battalion Chief. He was also President of the Union of Fire Officers before he retired and moved to Orlando Florida, bringing his wife and younger son Mark, with him.

O'Mara is a 1979 graduate of the University of Central Florida, where he is involved in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and the Student Government. He was elected President of the Student Board, and graduated and received a law degree from Florida State University College of Law in 1982.

Careers

O'Mara was an Assistant State Attorney with the District Attorney Office of Seminole County from 1982 to 1984. He served as president of the Bar County Seminole Association in 2000.

O'Mara is a legal analyst for WKMG Channel 6, a television station Orlando, Florida. After Zimmerman's case ended, he was employed as a legal analyst by CNN, a position he had held for more than two years.

O'Mara gained national attention while serving as defense attorney George Zimmerman, found not guilty of second-degree murder in the death shooting of Trayvon Martin.

In September 2013, after a domestic dispute between George and Shellie Zimmerman, O'Mara said he continued to represent George Zimmerman in a defamation suit against NBCUniversal but did not represent him in his "domestic case or upcoming divorce case."
