Education and career

Born in Gadsden, Alabama, Swindall earned a B.A. from the University of Georgia in 1972 and obtained a Doctorate degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1975. He practiced law in Atlanta from 1975 until his election to Congress.

In 1984, with Robb Austin as his campaign manager, Swindall defeated five Democrat congressmen Elliott H. Levitas with six percentage points, a disappointing election considering Levitas was elected relatively easily since his first election in 1974. He won by the same margin of actor Ben L. Jones in 1986. However, Swindall lost a rematch with Jones in 1988 with a margin of 20 points.

Legal issues

In October 1988, Swindall was indicted on ten charges of perjury related to money laundering schemes. In a record deal with an IRS agent disguised as a Colombian drug cartel representative, Swindall was informed that the $ 850,000 loan he was seeking to complete the construction of his luxury home included illegal drug money and that he would be part of an operation to "launder" the cash. Swindall proposed that a partner establish a mortgage company to distribute the money.

During the ensuing investigation into drug trafficking, Swindall lied to the federal grand jury about his knowledge that the funds came from drug trafficking operations, which were disputed by secret tapes. While one allegation of perjury was dismissed by District Judge Richard C. Freeman, the jury punished Swindall for nine allegations and was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of $ 30,450.

At the appeal, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeal canceled three of the amount, but the US Supreme Court upheld the remaining six and he began serving his sentence in 1994. He was dismissed by the Georgia Supreme Court in 1996.

After being released from prison on February 9, 1995, Swindall held a religious conservative radio show on the Providence Broadcasting Network. The motto of the show is "Where religion and politics meet." When the Providence Broadcasting Network ceased operations, Swindall announced that he would "pursue prison service." [1].

In June 2009, the Fulton County jury indicted Swindall and two of his employees who were dismissed for contributing an illegal campaign to Atlanta City Councilor Joyce Sheperd. The businessmen were indicted for making false statements because they said that Swindall was the source of actual contributions. The donation was reported on a Sheperd campaign disclosure form that came from someone else, including family and friends of two former employees.

In November 2009, he was involved in a confrontation with tenants at a flea market location previously rented; Swindall left after law enforcement officers and Park police arrived. He wanted to remove the wall depicting each stall in the flea market. Swindall also wanted to remove his other structure, but the request was rejected by Park College Police.

Swindall is married to former cheerleader Duke University, Kimberly. During his time in Congress, both were called Barbie and Ken of Politics. Swindall is the owner of several businesses in Atlanta and College Park.
