Paul R. Leonard (born July 3, 1943) is an American politician who is a member of the Ohio Democratic Party. He previously served as mayor of Dayton and Lieutenant Governor of Ohio.

Education

Leonard graduated from Ohio University with B.A. in journalism in 1965 and accepted J.D. from Northern Kentucky University in 1969.

Political career

Leonard was elected four times to a seat in the Ohio General Assembly. After his time at the Ohio General Assembly he later served as the mayor of Dayton, Ohio, from 1982 to 1986. After completing his term as mayor, he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio in 1986 on a ticket with Richard F. Celeste. He served as the 58th Lieutenant Governor from 1987 to 1991.

While the Mayor of Dayton, Leonard is known for being outgoing and youth-oriented, sometimes called "Mayor Rock 'N' Roll Dayton." He plays an electric guitar and appears in television commercials.

After his tenure as lieutenant governor, Leonard returned to Dayton to practice law. He founded the Center for Animal and Advocacy Law, a legal team advocating harsher punishment for those who persecute animals.

In addition to his legal practice, Leonard currently teaches in the department of political science at Wright State University and the University of Dayton. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Animal Law Defense Fund. She currently lives in Florida, but goes home to Dayton to teach her classes.
