Steven Wayne Benson (July 26, 1951 - July 3, 2015) was an American double assassin of his mother, Margaret Benson's tobacco heir; and his brother (actually his niece but later adopted), tennis player Scott Benson. (Margaret Hitchcock Benson is the heir of Lancaster Leaf Tobacco Co., Lancaster, Pa., And has no connection with the US-manufactured Benson & Hedges cigarette brand by Philip Morris.) He was born in 1951 in Baltimore.
On July 9, 1985 Benson put a car bomb on the family car, where Margaret, Scott, and Steven's sister, Carol Lynn Benson Kendall (former Miss Florida runner-up), were waiting for Benson to join them in the vehicle when the Chevrolet Suburban exploded. Kendall survived but was badly burned; Margaret and Scott died instantly from the impact of the bomb. Represented by Michael McDonnell's attorney, Steven Benson was finally convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree murder trial, arson ablution. He avoided the death penalty, and was sentenced to two life imprisonment. During his sentence, Benson was transferred to various prisons due to constant threats and harassment from other inmates.
Benson died at Taylor's Penitentiary in Perry, Florida, a stab wound on the head with a homemade knife on July 3, 2015.

Dominick Dunne's investigative crime show Dominick Dunne Power, Privilege and Justice devoted an hour to Steven Benson's case. Benson is also featured in a New Detective episode titled "Short Fuse" (Season 2, Episode 3). In addition, the Benson Family murder case was the subject of The Serpent's Tooth (Harper & Row, 1987), a book by New York Times No.1 author Christopher Andersen.
