James Stewart "Jim" Thayer (born May 25, 1949) is the author of a thriller novel and a lawyer. His first six novels were written in his full name, but since then his middle name was not used.

Thayer was born in Eugene, Oregon. His father was a farmer. He is a graduate of Washington State University where he was inducted into the honorary brotherhood of Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School.

Personal life
Thayer lives in Seattle, Washington. She is married and has two daughters, Alex and Annemarie. He also has two other brothers living in Seattle, Joe and John, and one sister, Connie.
